Funny how things work out though. The house we wanted was in a new development, and we were excited to buy all the upgrades and pick everything brand new. They called us and told us the house was going to be $25,000-30,000 more than they had originally told us. This really messes things up, because if we put in all the upgrades (we calculated about $50,000), then the house would cost more than it would likely appraise. This would cause all sorts of problems for the loan, etc. We had to think long and hard. But in an inspired moment, Paul mentioned that he would rather buy a smaller home and have monthly spending money than buy a bigger house. Immediately, we thought back to a home we had looked at about 2 years ago. This home was in a development very close to our kids. So we asked our agent to see if any of those homes were for sale now. Yay! There were a couple of them for sale and we fell in love with one of them. It turns out to be about $120,000 cheaper than we thought we might be spending. AND, best of all, everything is upgraded. (Well, we do want to change the countertops, not due to upgrade, but due to color). We are very happy with our purchase.
The loan just funded today, and I am excited that we might get our key tonight. We are happy to get started bringing our stuff over. We also can get rid of our storage unit. Though, there probably isn't room in the new home for our stuff there. But now we can get rid of stuff we don't need. We have paid about $150 per month for the last 4 years, $7,200!!! WHAT?!?! Can't wait to get rid of that expense. Not only that, I wonder what we haven't used in 4 years that we really, really need. Or what we can just throw away. Actually, maybe donate it and get the tax write off?
